Have you ever felt stuck?
Maybe it’s a bad habit or unhealthy relationship. Maybe it’s poor time management or negative self-talk. Maybe it’s a sin pattern or forgetfulness. Maybe it’s supposed to be a positive thing, but for some reason, it’s sucking the life out of you.
Whatever it is—it sucks to feel stuck.
The Crazy Cycle
For years I’ve been trying to figure out why I live in a crazy cycle of anger. It seems to live just beneath the surface and then something happens and the fury is released. It surprises both me and my family. I remember getting angry as a kid, but it seemed to go away during my college/early marriage years only to return with a vengeance in the last five years.
What’s going on? Am I just an angry person?
We don’t know what we don’t know. Isn’t that deep? The deeper truth is that we cannot grow until we know. If we stay ignorant of what we don’t know, we will stay stuck and unable to grow. Hey, that rhymes! Maybe I’ll write a song.
Unfortunately, we have an unlimited capacity to deceive ourselves. Ugh. So what’s the answer?
Self-awareness is the first step toward growth. “The best foundation of future success is self-awareness in the present.” -Craig Groeschel
In other words, we must be committed to personal development if we are going to get unstuck and have long term success.
The best tool I’ve come across is the Enneagram, an ancient personal-development tool that’s received, attention over the past several years. The Enneagram helps by describing nine basic types and the strengths and weaknesses of each.
Other assessments come close to this. I’m familiar with Myers-Briggs, DiSC, StrengthsFinder, and Four Temperaments Test. But in my opinion, Enneagram beats them all.
The key to the Enneagram is that it digs into our motivations and why we do what we do. “It not only reveals your personality type; it also shows the pitfalls of your type and how to navigate around them. No more getting in your own way. The Enneagram is like a map for becoming the best version of yourself.” -Michael Hyatt
I love that! I want to be the best version of me.
The Road Back to You
That’s why I’m so excited about the book The Road Back to You. So many lightbulbs went on for me when I read this book. To be honest, it felt like a rediscovery of who I am.
The Enneagram helped me discover my dominant type (I’m a Nine—Peacemaker), but more importantly, the gut motivation driving my type. It also describes what happens when I’m
It’s now my go-to manual for personal growth and development both for myself and in coaching others. I encourage you to check it out!
